Weekly WABL Wrap – Semi-Final – 6 September

14-1 Girls – Rori Roberts (sponsored by National Geotech)

Won against South West Slammers 37-34

Coach comments

  • A defensive battle. A tight game all the way through.
  • After a slow start from us, going down 9-2 early, the girls were able to regroup and do what we do best. We got the game back within 4 at quarter time, and from there we got in early in the second and led the rest of the way.
  • We hit up 10 early on the 4th, but slammers never went away, pulling back to be within 3, but we were able to hold on.
  • Another great team win. Everyone played their part perfectly.
  • Thank you parents, for being extra loud and supportive.
  • BRING ON THE GRAND FINAL!!!

Won against Eastern Suns 73-51

Coach comments

  • We had our best win of the season, beating the team that finished 1st in a display full of heart. The boys have taken our winning formula from the Winter Carnival, where we aggressively defend the whole court and have been able to sustain it for 32 minutes against teams who just can’t go the distance and get the reward of a GF.
  • It is a game they have been building towards all season, and the boys executed the plans from Thursday training with great discipline and deserved everything they got from the game.
  • In what was an even team effort where we had 6 players over 9 points, a couple of key role players really stood out on the weekend to highlight the depth of this team.
  • Harrison P, who on his debut year has had lots of lessons come his way, put a fire under the team mid-3rd quarter and took the game away from the Suns. I am so happy with him cause he wasn’t happy at HT and then came out and had such a positive effect in his team in the 2nd half and showed real maturity to do so.
  • Lenny H is a team favourite and got the loudest cheer I had heard from the bench all season when he hit a 2 from his favourite spot in the short corner on this 3rd quarter run. Finished his work efficiently all day, and he and Olly L gave our team a presence against the giant playing for the Suns all game.
  • Noah M likes playing against the Suns. Noah has a hard head and is built for the ballistic style of basketball we have adopted in finals. He had a good week at training and is starting to have a real influence on our defence and team play at the business end of the season.
  • All the leaders of our team did their job on the weekend and it was a great way to go into a GF where hopefully the basketball gods will be kind.

Won against Willetton Tigers 63-56

Coach comments

  • Our boys were solid and confident from start to finish in this game. We kept pushing the score to be out by 15 midway in the 3rd quarter.
  • Willetton threw everything at us, even fouling us 11 times in the last quarter to try to get back in this one. We handled the pressure well and look forward to more of the same this week.
  • Talin McCullough played a fantastic defensive role on the opposition’s best player and disrupted their offence with his pressure.
  • Elijah Mancini had a good offensive game for us and was unstoppable on the drive, even with a defender hanging off him.

14-4 Boys – Caitlin Rawes (sponsored by Crothers Pty Ltd)

Won against Hills Raiders 53-38

16-2 Girls – Reid Ballantine (sponsored by Access Hire)

Lost against Lakeside Lightning 50-72

Coach comments

  • Lost to the unbeaten Lakeside, who brought their normal great shooting game but also ramped up the full-court pressure, so our flow was definitely disrupted, and we couldn’t quite get to play at our best; nonetheless, a really great effort.
  • Always sad to see it slip away, but we should be proud of our season as a whole. We played some great games, and across the season, every player had some great games and great highlights.
  • In this final, I was really impressed with Maia Leckey, who absolutely took it to them, showed great competitiveness and was completely dangerous. She really energised the team.
  • Alyssa Rullo was really locked in on defence and determined to stop the Lakeside 3’s. She was also really observant and contributed good on-court insight into the team at timeouts. She iced a super deep three to end the game, just to warn them she is coming for them in 2027.

Won against Mandurah Magic 70-62

Coach comments

  • I said last week that we’d played our best game of the year. I was wrong! This week was our best game of the year. After finishing 5th on the ladder, we knocked off the top team in a massive upset to secure our spot in the Grand Final. But more importantly, the credit goes to the girls. They have developed so much this season, and what they’ve done over the past few weeks has been seriously impressive.
  • We changed things up for finals and put a completely new plan in place, and they’ve done such a great job adjusting to it. They’re listening to instructions, understanding why we’ve made the changes and what I’m asking them to do, and then actually executing the plan on court. Today was a perfect example of that.
  • And a massive shoutout to the parents who ran a defensive chant for the entire last quarter. It genuinely helped swing the momentum and was crucial to the win.
  • Who would’ve expected us to be sitting here heading into a Grand Final? After a pre‑season game against Cockburn where we lost by 50, certainly not me.
  • It’s pretty fitting that our GF is against them. I earmarked early on that Cockburn was the redemption game and our benchmark.
  • In that mid-season redemption game, we’d already improved, going down by only 6. Now, after another 10 weeks of growth, we get to take them on again.
  • This was Darcy Brian’s best game of her life, and what made it even more special was that it came in a high‑pressure final when the team needed someone to score. She shot 54% from the field, including 3 from 5 from the three‑point line, totalling 18 crucial points. She also added 7 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal.
  • Sierra Chrislynne Ong has had massive improvement this year and stepped up again today, hitting two huge shots in a row late in the fourth quarter. She finished with 4 points, 13 rebounds, a deflection, a steal and 2 blocks.
  • Even as one of our smallest players, Bianca Bajin has played centre whenever we’ve run zone because she’s outstanding at staying active and disrupting everything. Offensively, she continues to attack the basket and put pressure on the defence, which in this game got her to the free‑throw line 9 times, hitting 7 of them for 78% efficiency. She backed that up with 19 points, 16 rebounds, 6 assists, 3 deflections, 3 steals and a block.

Coach comments

  • To win in double overtime in a semi-final just shows the resilience and toughness of this group. In what was a very physical and challenging game, we overcame an 8-point deficit to send the game into overtime.
  • Teams were very evenly matched in the first overtime, but we came out with purpose in the 2nd overtime to win that period 14 to 2.
  • These girls have had such a great season, and getting to a grand final just shows their commitment to each other.
  • Lottie Ballentine had a great game. She was in foul trouble early but came on very strong in the 2nd half. Her presence in the keyway both on offence and defence was vital to our win. Not only did she rebound well and change a lot of shots, but she finished with 17 points.
  • Paige Ogden had her best game when we needed it most. She played smart and was composed on offence when we needed to slow down. Her passing and teamwork with Lottie Ballentine in the 4th quarter got us back into the game.
  • Millie Stancil came in with a cool head in both overtime periods to settle us down. Her experience was vital to our win. She never looks flustered and controls the tempo really well. Her passing into the post and creating angles was a highlight.
