Our U12 Division 4 Girls finished on top of the ladder with a 14-2 record for the season. Little did they know that their two most heart-stopping games of the season were yet to come.
In their semi-final against the Joondalup Wolves, the team trailed for the entire game as they struggled with foul trouble and a ferocious Wolves defensive effort. Our girls managed to keep the margin within reach for all of regular time though, and somehow did *just* enough to squeak the game into overtime. OT was as tight as the rest of the game with the lead going back and forth but in the end, our 12-4 girls prevailed and won their way through to the GF against Perry Lakes.
On to the GF and once again, foul trouble was a problem and the game was tight the entire way through. A strong fourth quarter from our Redbacks girls saw us secure a five-point lead with less than a minute to go. But a minute is a long time in basketball! And Perry Lakes were not giving up. They hit two quick baskets and with 9 seconds to play, the margin was just 1 point. Two time outs and the longest 9 seconds in the world later … and the victory was ours. Thanks for the heart attacks girls!
Jacinta Wladyka was named MVP of the game and huge congrats to coach Marcia Dowling and assistant Tatum Cooper for their hard work with this very young group (three of the players are double or triple bottom-age!).
