Refereeing can be a rewarding and fun experience and a great way to earn some extra cash while working in an active environment. PBA, in conjunction with Basketball WA, conducts a number of State and Nationally accredited refereeing courses during the year designed to accredit participants who are new to refereeing as well as our elite level referees.

Association Beginner Referee Course
This course is designed to teach the basic skills required to be a basketball referee. No prior experience is required to undertake this course however participants must be at least 12 years old prior to undertaking this course. Additional on-court training may be done after the course at the referees home association.

Level 1 Referee Course
This course is designed to teach the skill necessary to competently referee at domestic basketball (minimum of under 15s or 16s) as well as seniors. Domestic referees who have been refereeing for more than 12 months are eligible for this course. Referees who are over 15 years of age should endeavour to be a Level 1 Referee prior to refereeing at WABL or State or Country Championships.
Advanced Referee Course
This course is designed to teach the advanced skills of officiating and aimed at representative officials who are refereeing WABL, State or Country Championships (championship divisions). Referees successfully accredited at this level will be competently officiating Under 16 or Under 18 Championship level at WABL or equivalent in country regions under FIBA timing regulations.
Representative Referee Course
This course is designed to teach the expectations of an elite level official. Referees undertaking this course should be already active within the high-performance pathway or wishing to enter the high-performance pathway. Referees possessing the qualities to advance to the SBL or SBL division 1 level will be granted this accreditation.
Level 2 Referee Course
This course is designed to upskill referees who are actively officiating SBL Division 1 to assist them to the SBL level. Referees should have undertaken the Level 2 Course prior to gaining an SBL contract.
Level 3 Referee Course
This course is designed to upskill referees who are actively officiating SBL as a contracted official. Referees should have undertaken the Level 3 course within the first 3 years of receiving an SBL contract.
