As we’re now only two days away from the start of the 2020 WABL Season, we thought it would be a great time to profile our WABL Director, Amien Sym.
Amien’s been around basketball for 30 years: playing socially and coaching at both a domestic and WABL level. He became part of the Redbacks family when son Jaxon started playing WABL for our club.
Three years ago, when President Anthony Nixon was looking for assistance with the Redbacks WABL program, Amien was happy to put his hand up to help and he’s been our WABL Director ever since.
What’s been the most satisfying part of Amien’s Board involvement to date? Seeing the growth of our junior program over the last few years and being able to take strategies discussed at Board level from idea to reality.
What excites him about what the future holds for the Perth Redbacks?
“We have a fantastic group of people involved with the Club that share the desire to make the Redbacks’ basketball experience amazing. This club has a long and proud history which is awesome to be a part of and it’s also wonderful to be part of a Board that is very focused on further development and growth in the WABL program.”
Qualifications
Amien has a Bachelor of Education, Diploma of Financial Services and is currently studying a post-graduate Diploma in Financial Planning.
Background
Amien is the Managing Director of club sponsor Infuse Life and has over 20 years of experience in financial services. Infuse Life are specialist Life insurance Brokers who are based in Perth Western Australia.
Amien is passionate about sport and has played basketball for 30 years which included touring teams to the Philippines and Australia with Baptist basketball.
Amien currently coaches basketball domestically for his son’s and daughters’ school teams and was a WABL Assistant Coach in 2018 for Redbacks Men’s U18C and the Head Coach in 2019 for the Redbacks Men’s U18/3 team.
Outside of basketball, Amien enjoys playing golf, watching the Perth Scorchers and loudly supporting the West Coast Eagles.
