Weekly WABL Wrap – Round 6 – 31 May 2026

12-1 Girls – Olivia Weddikara (sponsored by Visa4You Migration Agency)

Game cancelled (vs Cougars) due to power outage at away venue.

Coach comments

  • Unfortunately, there was a power outage at the start of the second quarter, so we couldn’t continue and the game got cancelled. The girls were playing really well and were on their way to catching up.
  • All the girls played really well, listened to corrections, and applied them really well. I’m so proud of the improvements they’re making every week!

12-2 Girls – Dave Power (sponsored by RocketDNA)

Won against Cougars 34-20

Coach comments

  • In the first half we got off to a good start offensively, creating plenty of good shots through strong team play, attacking well and finding open players.
  • In the second half, Cougars increased their physicality and our girls responded with composure, playing through it and around it to finish the half strongly.
  • This was a tough-fought game, with the whole team unit playing for each other under pressure and adversity.
  • Narayana Daley was the cool and composed leader for us this game, controlling the offence, solid on ball pressure defence and battling for offensive rebounds in the tall timber.
  • Alannah Murphy’s development is bringing her out of her shell. Alannah was aggressive on defence, attacked on offence, and moved the ball well. We look forward to Alannah’s breakout game offensively, it’s coming!
  • India Mascurine has really embraced her role and is playing better and better every week. Defensively loud, making quicker decisions on offence and taking good shot options.

12-3 Girls – Paul Philpott (sponsored byInternational Commissioning Solutions Group Pty Ltd)

Won against Suns 57-14

Coach comments

  • Whoop Whoop ! What a game. Our Super Star Redbacks girls really put on a clinic today.
  • Each quarter saw us keep our score tally high and our foul count low.
  • Our scrambling all over Suns inbounds was outstanding, and our full court forced turnovers was debilitating for the opposition.
  • So much development and skills seen on display by our girls today, clearly highlighting that individually we were artists in basketball and as a team we painted our masterpiece.
  • So much to mention from all our girls, it’s hard to pick standout players. However, Jean Grayson put on another fine performance with a (I think) career high game score of 20 points.
  • As some say, you only get once chance to introduce yourself and Matilda Marsland did this today with a clear court presence and 4 points.
  • Finally, well done everyone this was truly a BIG Team effort.

12-4 Girls – Indiana Ballantine (sponsored by Bruining Partners and John Hughes Ford)

Lost against Hills 38-18

Coach comments

  • The girls played well, regardless of the score line, in what was a tough game with two players away. Fortunately, our amazing train-on Sophia was able to play for us.
  • A big focus for us this week was doing the little things right, and the girls went above and beyond in that area. They consistently passed ahead and found open teammates which made getting the ball up the court so much easier.
  • There were great passes, particularly the bounce passes off the inbound, which created strong scoring opportunities.
  • Clara did an outstanding job of taking on feedback across both training and the game, and applying it every time she stepped on the court. She also did a great job when I asked her to go out on the court as our big when both of our bigs were off.
  • Mila played hard defence as usual this weekend. She is always finding her player and sticking to them like glue. This week it was especially important because we gave her the job of defending one of the Hills’ best players and Mila kept her to only 8 points.
  • Molly also played great defence. She got loud and pressured them well once they picked up their dribble. She also brought the energy both on and off the court, cheering from the bench and getting her teammates energised in the freezing stadium.

12-1 Boys – Wayne Dropulich (sponsored by SLS Advisory)

Lost against Eagles 74-56

Coach comments

  • This was another game where the scoreboard didn’t fully reflect the effort and growth shown by the group.
  • We faced a strong East Perth side and got off to a difficult start, falling behind 19–11 at quarter time after struggling to contain their transition game and outside shooting.
  • The second quarter was our toughest offensively, with East Perth extending their lead through efficient scoring and strong individual performances. However, I was pleased with the way our boys kept competing. We continued to attack the basket, earned trips to the free-throw line, and found contributions from multiple players despite the scoreboard pressure.
  • The third quarter saw improved moments, with better scoring opportunities created through ball movement and effort on the glass. Baxter Miles, Hudson McClintock, and Cayden Wedge helped keep us in the contest.
  • The final quarter was the highlight. Rather than dropping heads, the group continued to fight until the final buzzer. We scored 24 points in the last period, moved the ball well, and had several players step up offensively. Cayden hit a big three, Hudson finished strongly around the basket and from the perimeter, while Alex Litas, Jesse Freeman, and Jaxson Pentland all added important late baskets.
  • While the result wasn’t what we were chasing, there were plenty of positives to take away. Our effort never wavered and we showed resilience throughout the game. If we can bring that same determination while improving our defensive discipline and consistency, we’ll continue to make strong progress over the remainder of the season.
  • Jaxson Pentland put together a strong defensive performance, finishing with 2 deflections, 2 steals, and 6 rebounds. His work rate stood out throughout the game, particularly in transition where he was regularly the first player back on defence. Jaxson’s willingness to sprint back, contest possessions, and do the hard defensive work provided an important foundation for the team.
  • Baxter Miles was outstanding, finishing with 14 points on an exceptional 87% shooting while also pulling down 8 rebounds. His efficiency around the basket was a major highlight, consistently converting his opportunities and providing a reliable scoring option for the team. Baxter’s work on the boards was equally important, helping secure possessions at both ends of the floor.

12-2 Boys – Adam Gunnis (sponsored by KPS BUILDING GROUP and PlanWA)

Lost against Eagles 66-38

12-3 Boys – Mason Wigmore (sponsored by Victory Technologies Pty Ltd and Stanley Ag WA)

Won against Perth Redbacks U12-4, 71-51

Coach comments

  • We entered our Redbacks derby feeling very nervous, knowing we were up against a fast, tough, and challenging team.
  • After a slow opening five minutes, we began to find space in transition, with our help defence and rebounding setting up a strong run that carried us through to the end of the game.
  • Zach Harris played the best game of his WABL career so far. He was balanced with the ball, controlled his decision-making, and worked hard defensively and on the rebounds.
  • Kedar McCullough contributed all of the little things, extra passes, tough rebounds, and excellent floor spacing were all highlights of his game.
  • Also a special shoutout to Austin Houlahan for making his Redbacks debut and scoring his first basket in red.

12-4 Boys – Charlize Nicolaou (sponsored by Float Docks)

Lost against Perth Redbacks U12-3, 71-51

Coach comments

  • It was an evenly matched game, but the 3s team were able to get ahead on the scoreboard and we couldn’t quite reel them back in.
  • If a few more of our usual shots had dropped, it would have been a much closer contest.
  • The boys all played their hardest, and Jackson and I couldn’t be happier with their level of commitment and the improvement they’ve shown.
  • Riley had his highest scoring game yet. Usually, being our best player at assists, he stepped up and really showed everyone what he’s capable of as a scorer as well.
  • Harlan also had a strong game, assisting the majority of our shots and stepping up to guard players taller than him (which usually doesn’t happen)!
  • Brendan had a great defensive game, although the other team shut him down on offence, he really proved himself in defence, helping a lot with the turnovers this game.

12-5 Boys – Craig Dropulich (sponsored by Ganjing World)

Lost against Suns 29-59

Coach comments

  • Another hard game for us today. The Suns had a couple of really good players that we were just unable to stop from scoring, but we kept working hard and stayed committed to our team systems to keep improving how we want to play basketball.
  • Our boys never dropped their heads and are always positive on the court.
  • Regis Luong was our top scorer with 8 points and played his best game of the season. His defense is rock solid, and this week he put up a few more shots and did really well.
  • Aarav Chouhan had a good game on defense too. He is our biggest defender and best rebounder. Aarav is starting to work things out on the court and it is encouraging to see him make progress.

14-1 Girls – Rori Roberts (sponsored by National Geotech)

Lost against Slammers 37-40

14-2 Girls – Whitney Perret (sponsored by Accelerate Blue)

Lost against Senators 70-37

Coach comments

  • We started a little shaky but once we were patient, we really took it to Senators. The scoreboard did not reflect how close we got and how rattled the other team was.
  • Half time saw us only down by 12 points and we made it hard for them in the 3rd.
  • Hands down, the best team defensive game we’ve had all season!
  • I’m very impressed at how we handled full and half court traps for the entire game.
  • Our passing and patience was brilliant for a huge portion of that game and we really showed ourselves how much we can compete with the better teams. Great progress by the entire team!
  • It is very hard to pick stand outs in this game, as everyone contributed so well and at no point did we take a backwards step when subs came in.
  • Bella did well to put pressure on their passing into the post. She racked up a number of steals getting in the lane.
  • Charlee did well to adjust her defence and had arms everywhere, making it difficult for them to get an outlet.
  • The guards did well to put pressure on the ball carrier and if a couple more calls went our way, Senators would have been in serious trouble.

14-3 Girls – Matt Bailey (sponsored by Crothers Pty Ltd)

Won against Eagles 22-51

14-4 Girls – Bryn Arnold (sponsored by Mount Hawthorn Clinical Psychology)

Lost against Suns 60-23

14-1 Boys – Dave Ogden (sponsored by Global Cabling)

Won against Slammers 85-54

Coach comments

  • The game was highlighted by our offensive group starting to fire, with a season-high 85 points built on a mixture of pressing, transition, and half-court actions.
  • The real stat was 30 assists as a group. That’s 3 times our season average and I think everyone in the team got at least one.
  • JP and Victor led the group with 6 assists each, with Victor also our leading rebounder.
  • Maz worked hard all game in his role in our press and had a strong all-round performance.
  • Harry F led the team in scoring with a very efficient 23.
  • And the two young kids, Lenny had the crowd fired up with a hot start and is really starting to look comfortable in our offensive, while Eli found some love from the three-point line, hitting a couple and finishing with 10 points of his own.

14-2 Boys – Craig Dropulich (sponsored by M & T Gomm Pty Ltd ATF Gomm Family Trust T/As Customised Metal Works)

Won against Willetton 55-52

Coach comments

  • Our boys started well controlling the game and the opposition in the first quarter.
  • Our defence was solid, but we just lacked the spark needed to fully put the game away early.
  • As the game progressed, Willetton were able to apply more pressure and, in a low-scoring contest, worked their way back to lead by 7 with 5 minutes remaining.
  • We finally got revved and charged home to win by 3 after a 14 to 2, late in the last quarter.
  • Matthew Price had a good game after dealing with being on 4 fouls for most of the second half. Despite that, he continued to play effective defence and brought great energy to the group to get us over the line.
  • Lenny Brown played great minutes to close out the last quarter, defending very well and getting busy on the offence to finish out the game.

14-3 Boys – Dom Pitchen (sponsored by Candy Verse)

Lost against Slammers 51-84

Coach comments

  • The boys started strongly, and at times their ball movement was excellent to watch. It allowed us to break the Slammers’ press effectively, create open scoring opportunities, and generate high-quality shots.
  • When we moved the ball with purpose and shared it well, we were able to control the tempo of the game and put consistent pressure on the defence.
  • Frankie was a strong presence on both ends of the court throughout the game. He handled pressure well, confidently taking on their press and consistently making good decisions with the ball. His composure and awareness allowed us to break the defence effectively, creating scoring opportunities for both himself and his teammates. Well done Frankie.
  • Riley’s strong ball handling was a key factor in our offensive success, allowing him to create numerous scoring opportunities throughout the game. His ability to control the ball under pressure and attack the defence helped keep the boys competitive and generated quality chances for both himself and his teammates. Riley’s confidence and composure with the ball provided an important spark on the offensive end.

14-4 Boys – Caitlin Rawes (sponsored by Crothers Pty Ltd)

Lost against Hills 45-48

16-1 Girls – Nigel Esau (sponsored by Xceed Real Estate)

Lost against Hawks 38-77

Coach comments

  • The girls had stretches of good basketball and at times played the offence really well.
  • When they communicated with each other, they were able to get stops, and with some good ball movement, got great buckets.
  • We struggled to score the ball but had stretches of good defence.
  • We will look to improve on these over the next few weeks.
  • Chelsea, Hayley and Sienna had strong showings today.

16-2 Girls – Reid Ballantine (sponsored by Access Hire)

Won against Willetton 57-55

Coach comments

  • Definitely one of the messier and scrappier games today. We had height and rebounding advantage, but Willetton had great leg speed and defensive coverage.
  • Once again, we created plenty of opportunities to put the game away, and while our FG% kept things a bit tighter than we’d like, we still found a way to get it done.
  • In Q4, Annabella and Sasha stepped up with some really tidy outside shots, helping us secure the win.
  • Harper Grace and Olivia Birsa both stood up today claiming 12 rebounds each and 8 and 6 points respectively, all hard earned in the keyway.
  • Sasha Kuan bookended the game really well, starting with composure and finishing with a quicker, neat tempo when we needed exactly that.
  • Maia Leckey was disruptive on defence with consistently sneaky hands in passing lanes for steals and deflections to stop Willetton’s flow. Congratulations on 50 games Maia!
  • Lauren Jones deserves credit for taking some heavy hits throughout the game and continuing to play through it.
  • Anabella Lewis had great defensive coverage during the game and got open for neat outside shots in Q4 to claim the win.

16-3 Girls – Geoff Alger (sponsored by Habitat Finance)

Won against Lightning 73-48

Coach comments

  • The players arrived determined to start well against a team that had edged us out at grading, and they did just that.
  • They built a strong lead across the first and second quarters, during which time the team showed poise, purpose, determination, and first-rate defensive discipline.
  • The second half was a much more closely contested affair where Lightning showed how dangerous it can be when defensive discipline drops off.
  • The group continues to impress with their willingness to play team basketball and bring the things we work on at training to game day.
  • We finished the game happy to give our fabulous team manager Tanya a birthday win and ready to work on areas for improvement.
  • Nora Ostermeyer had another great all-round game, recording a double-double, made even more impressive by her efficiency shooting at 86% from the field, along with 3 assists and zero turnovers.
  • Alida Barmentloo went 1 rebound shy of her own double double. She also finished efficiently and played a great all round game.
  • Eva Blyth’s defensive hustle and ability to apply constant pressure without fouling is an asset every week. Combined with her offensive poise and decision-making, she is a highly efficient and productive two-way player.

16-4 Girls – Ashley Brian (sponsored by Realth Property Group)

Won against Suns 47-45

Coach comments

  • What a thriller!!! Down 14 points in the third quarter, things were not going our way. Our shots just weren’t dropping under their pressure and we couldn’t contain their speed when they broke our press.
  • After a small adjustment, we started to gain some momentum and came storming back to take the lead by 2 in the final minute. From there, we just had to hold on. It was an exciting finish for everyone involved.
  • Allegra Care was outstanding. She was the pillar in our press adjustment and showed great leadership by ensuring everyone was in their position quickly. She played the gatekeeper role perfectly, channeling ball handlers into our traps and creating countless opportunities for her teammates to rack up steals, while still contributing 2 deflections and 2 steals herself. Fittingly, it was Allegra who scored the crucial basket late in the game to put us in front.
  • Lily Yin played one of her best games of the season. Her 9 points came at important moments, but it was her all-round contribution that really stood out. She battled hard on the glass for 7 rebounds, disrupted the opposition with 2 deflections and 4 steals, and brought great energy throughout the game when we needed it.
  • Sierra was also outstanding and had a huge impact at both ends of the floor. She finished with 6 points, all coming from offensive rebounds. Her total 14 rebounds were massive in a game where every possession counted. Defensively she was everywhere, finishing with 8 deflections, 5 steals and a block as she helped spark the comeback.

16-1 Boys – Cameron Redhead (sponsored by Geist Consulting)

Lost against Hawks 98-74

Coach comments

  • A strong first half from the boys against a tough Perry Lakes team had us all tied up at half time.
  • Unfortunately Perry Lakes ramped it up in the second half and we were just unable to go with them this week.

16-2 Boys – Francis Crawshaw (sponsored by F45 Victoria Park)

Lost against Binar 79-85

16-3 Boys –Vance Karimi (sponsored by School Bus Logistics Pty Ltd)

Won against Eagles 58-57

Coach comments

  • It was an exciting tight game from the beginning to the final whistle. We started strong and built on the lead in the first.
  • Our opponent adjusted their defence throughout the second and third, tried a few variations of full and three-quarter court zone presses and we had leads change a few times.
  • It wasn’t until mid-way through the forth where our boys were reignited and locked-in in transition D to cause turnovers and win the game.
  • It was great to see our boys make good decisions to work through the zone press which often lead to transition O advantages.
  • We did struggle with the aggressive D against us in the half court which sped us up and we didn’t quite find time to execute our triggers.
  • Tom was all over the boards in D and O, helping to clean up possessions. He’s found good timing to flash up and get open, helping move the ball through the top and open up baseline cuts. He was a defensive force in the paint, contesting shots and rotating into help with good timing.
  • Eoin communicated well with his teammates to make sure we have good match ups in our set D. He closes out with good timing to take away advantages and squares up to protect the basket and cause turnovers. He fights hard to lock and trail through screens to force his player into turnover passes. He made quick decisions to take baseline drives, kicking out to corners to give us good open looks or cut through the gaps.
  • Caelan did well to flash to the middle in transition with good timing to get open. He was all over defensive and offensive boards giving us multiple shot opportunities with his passing.
  • Elijah was good in D, putting plenty of pressure on the ball, causing turnovers. He fights for rebounds and kicks out to push the ball quickly in our transition O.

16-4 Boys – Oliver March (sponsored by Rangecon)

Won against Hills 91-86

Coach comments

  • The game started relatively slowly for us, defensively we gave up some easy shots which Hills capitalised on.
  • Through the second quarter, momentum finally swung our way and our defensive trap, along with offensive movement and distribution got us back in the game.
  • The boys have found ways to stick together and get over the line, particularly throughout the last 2 games, which I’m very proud of.
  • Maksim had an absolute blunder scoring 33, and also initiated the run in the second quarter.
  • Cooper and Lucas responded very well to certain adjustments we made throughout the game, which played a big part in getting us over the line.
  • Will hit some massive shots down the stretch to help us hold on.

18-1 Girls – Shaun Bennison (sponsored by Strike Drilling)

Won against Hawks 77-66

Coach comments

  • The girls started strong and stuck to the defensive concepts we’ve been working on, matching the physicality which was great to see.
  • The game was a grind in patches with both teams scoring, but the girls hit some big shots to extend the lead going into the 4th quarter.
  • When put under pressure and the lead was reduced quickly, we stuck to our principles, stayed disciplined, and got the win.
  • Maddie was strong in the paint today and really took the game on offensively, which was great to see.
  • Darcie hit some big 3s against her old club, lifting both the crowd and the team.
  • Gabby and Sara kept the scoreboard ticking over, and Kaia had another strong all-round team performance.
  • Annabelle also had some great takes at the rim, putting foul pressure on the opposition.
  • The team played together well today, and everyone contributed when it mattered.

18-2 Girls – Simon Daff (sponsored by West Coast Reinforcing)

Won against Hawks 77-40

Coach comments

  • It was a dominant display from the girls today, we won from start to finish.
  • What was most pleasing was the fact we had all 10 players for the first time this season.
  • We controlled the tempo all game, and when we do that it lowers our turnovers and allows us to play with more efficiency.
  • Our bigs really dominated this game, which was pleasing to see.
  • Paige Ogden, after a preseason injury, is finally back to her dominant self. She plays at her own pace and is never rushed. Most pleasing was how offensively she was equally effective inside the keyway and on the perimeter.
  • Arabella Kahl continues to build fitness and confidence. Her ability to rebound and run the lanes is a highlight. Her midrange jumpshot is becoming an important weapon.
  • Shout out to Lottie Ballentine, who was a question mark before the game with a hand injury. She battled through and played an important role in our win.

Coach comments

  • Great to take a win this week and win every quarter.
  • The late start to the game and the scoreboard not working were challenges, but we knew that coming out strong in the first quarter and building a lead would be an important part of our game plan. We led by 7 points heading into Q2.
  • Both Q2 and Q3 were tighter quarters, and at times our offence wasn’t as consistent or composed as we planned for.
  • Rebounding was improved from prior weeks as a focus area.
  • Last quarter won by 17 pts, taking the final score with a. 24pt win.
  • Macen Ridge had a incredible game both ends of the court. He dominated on rebounding and the team found the right look in’s to get the ball to Macen, finishing with 17 points to add to our total.
  • Tyson Pascoe working hard every week getting rebound and putting up shots. Always amazing to see his speed and athletic ability on court.
  • Kobe Miller took on our challenge this week to guard Tigers top scorer and it was impressive. His read to intercept and rebounding was great to see.

21 Girls – Shaun Bennison (sponsored by Freeman Chiropractic)

Lost against Slammers 65-63

Coach comments

  • A good start by the girls today, scoring quickly and aggressive at the rim.
  • Struggled to find the keyway in the later parts of the game against a zone offence, but when we executed properly we looked really strong, getting kick-outs to shooters and finding the bigs inside the paint.
  • It was unlucky not to come away with the win, with a few timely errors down the stretch, but the girls will learn from it and continue to grow.
  • Olivia was strong inside the paint today, staying aggressive and looking to score.
  • Dakota was good down the stretch to get some much needed points.
  • Hannah played well running the wing, alongside Matilta, Harriot, Theory, Blaise.

  • We had one of those games that we did everything right except for converting.
  • We fought hard the whole game, and although we missed a lot of easy shots, our defence was very effective and the score was even at full time.
  • We kept playing hard throughout overtime to clinch the win. Great effort boys!
  • James Reid was very consistent with making good decisions on offense and pressing hard on defense.
  • Ethan Wood-Hill kept his high scoring percentage going with tough drives through the middle.
  • Max did a great job keeping their bogs away from the paint, and also had some strong scores through the middle.
