Weekly WABL Wrap – Round 9 – 21 June 2026

12-1 Girls – Olivia Weddikara (sponsored by Visa4You Migration Agency)

Won against Senators 47-40

Coach comments

  • The girls did everything we asked today – their speed, defence, and control of the ball on offence looked like a completely different team!
  • I was really impressed and proud of how we played on Sunday. We are really starting to settle into our roles as individuals, which is having a massive impact on the whole team.
  • Immy’s speed in defence was amazing to watch. She used her body and height to her advantage and really impressed me today.
  • Jem was given instructions, went on the court, and did exactly what we asked and even better than expected! She really stepped up today, and I hope she continues to grow as a leader on the court.
  • Hazel and Niyala’s skills as bigs have really improved, and they were both key to our win on Sunday. So proud of the progress they’ve made!

12-2 Girls – Dave Power (sponsored by RocketDNA)

Lost against East Perth 18-24

Coach comments

  • This game was a good learning experience against physicality that was not always controlled, resulting in some forced turnovers.
  • By the fourth, we had started to adjust, find our shape, and move around the defence, which is a positive sign when seeing different coverages.
  • Offensively we did get good driving opportunities and good looks, we just struggled to get second opportunities and some quality looks we are normally able to generate.
  • Defensively we were very good in transition and good for early offence.
  • It came down to East Perth knocking down some long twos and free throws, which was the difference.
  • Daisy Robertson was trying to make plays offensively and got a few break out drives from good defensive plays.
  • Claire McKern had a patch in the fourth of using her size defensively and being aggressive attacking the basket that helped us rally in the fourth to only 2 behind.
  • Alannah Murphy was valiantly putting effort in both ends of the floor and got some really good looks in the third and fourth quarters.

12-3 Girls – Paul Philpott (sponsored byInternational Commissioning Solutions Group Pty Ltd)

Lost against East Perth 24-45

Coach comments

  • Written by Sally Dowling (asst. coach): The girls played hard with their whole hearts, and worked as a team better than I have seen all season. They took instructions extremely well and lifted each other up throughout the whole game. I’m extremely proud of all the effort they put in this week.
  • Jean had a stellar game as usual, with too many steals and fast breaks to count. She worked really hard to keep the ball moving and get the team out of tough spots, keeping her head up and moving the ball around. Her efforts in defense also had a great impact, staying in front of her player consistently and dominating the key way.
  • Ruby was a key player this week, being a real help on and off the court. She was always the first one to lift someone off the floor, whether they were a teammate or not. Her sportsmanship isn’t taught, but rather reflects her heart of gold we all love. She additionally had a great impact on the court, with strong defense and good decision making through passes, dribbling up the court and shots.
  • Tilyah had a stunner game, again with steals and fast breaks and really showed me her IQ this week. She was always in the right spot, whether it was to help out a teammate or intercept a pass – Tilyah was there. Her help defense also made a huge impact on keeping the eagles points low

12-4 Girls – Indiana Ballantine (sponsored by Bruining Partners and John Hughes Ford)

Lost against Cougars 67-3

Coach comments

  • Round 9 was a tough game against the Cougars who are top of the ladder. The girls showed amazing resilience even when we were down.
  • They continued to work hard and although the scoreboard didn’t show it, the girls showed amazing determination from start to finish.
  • The girls had a strong performance at the start of the second quarter holding them to 0 points for an entire 10 minutes.
  • Gwyn and Molly both did really well bringing the ball up, especially when they tried to trap us on the sideline. Gwyn made smart passes back to Molly, who then brought the ball up the court either by dribbling or passing.
  • Indi did really well driving into the defence and drawing fouls, allowing for her to score all her points through free throws.

12-1 Boys – Wayne Dropulich (sponsored by SLS Advisory)

Lost against Willetton 58-197

Coach comments

  • We started the game competitively, matching the Tigers early through some excellent outside shooting. Hudson McClintock knocked down a pair of first-quarter threes, while Baxter Miles and Tamati Roberts also connected from long range to keep us within striking distance.
  • The second quarter proved challenging as Willetton found their rhythm offensively and capitalised on transition opportunities. We struggled to consistently contain their key scorers and found ourselves facing a significant halftime deficit. Credit to the boys though they continued to compete and never stopped looking for ways to score.
  • Cayden Wedge was a constant threat throughout the game, finding ways to score both inside and from the perimeter. We also received valuable contributions from across the group, with Alex Litas, Gus Rafferty, Hudson McClintock, Baxter Miles and Alby O’Brien all adding important baskets.
  • While the result was disappointing, the effort never dropped. The boys continued to play hard right through the final buzzer and kept looking to improve each possession. Against a strong Willetton side, we were reminded of the importance of transition defence, communication and rebounding, but also showed flashes of the ball movement and shooting ability we know we’re capable of.
  • Cayden Wedge led the way offensively, finishing with 15 points and consistently finding ways to score against a tough Willetton defence. He knocked down a big three-pointer, attacked the basket aggressively and continued to compete regardless of the scoreboard. Cayden’s ability to create scoring opportunities and keep applying pressure was a major positive throughout the game.
  • Hudson McClintock provided a huge spark from the perimeter, finishing with 12 points and connecting on three three-pointers. His shooting helped stretch the defence and gave the team valuable offensive momentum at key moments. Hudson stayed confident throughout the game and was rewarded for his willingness to step up and take big shots when the team needed them.

Lost against Cougars 42-49

12-3 Boys – Mason Wigmore (sponsored by Victory Technologies Pty Ltd and Stanley Ag WA)

Lost against Eagles 54-58

12-4 Boys – Charlize Nicolaou (sponsored by Float Docks)

Won against Perth Redbacks U12-5, 74-20

Coach comments

  • All 10 of the boys played hard from the first whistle to the last, using each other well and playing to their strengths. This allowed the group to push and extend their lead from the very beginning.
  • Will was amazing, contributing to the majority of the assists for the game. He’s become more confident in his ability as a basketball player as the season has progressed.
  • Harlan played a smart and hard game, showing he shouldn’t be underestimated by the opposition.

12-5 Boys – Craig Dropulich (sponsored by Ganjing World)

Lost against Perth Redbacks U12-4, 20-74

Coach comments

  • It’s always tough playing another Redbacks team, and this game wasn’t a true reflection of how much we’ve improved this year, with the boys a little shell-shocked early on.
  • However, there were positives towards the end of the game, where we showed glimpses of what has been worked on at training, with those efforts starting to pay dividends for some of our players.
  • Issei John played his first game, scored his first bucket and was a strong force in the rebounding contest, in his first game, he showed that he definitely is capable at doing well at the WABL level. Keep up the good work Issei.
  • Felix Kai Chwan Tan is a consistent and reliable player, working in one of our hardest roles bringing the ball up and acting as our inbounder. Felix has shown steady improvement all season, consistently getting himself into the right positions and was unlucky not to score more.

14-1 Girls – Rori Roberts (sponsored by National Geotech)

Lost against Willetton 58-59

Coach comments

  • A good learning game for the girls.
  • Our first 3 quarters were amazing, we had good spacing on offence and applied strong defensive pressure, leading throughout all three.
  • The fourth quarter was messy, and when the game was there to be won, it came down to Willetton simply wanting it more than we did.
  • Still lots of positives to take away from the game.
  • Josie Smith did an amazing job on the offensive rebounds. Pulling them in and going straight back up, she had 12 points for the game.
  • Oceana Williams stayed aggressive the whole game, attacking the ring hard and putting pressure on Willetton’s ball handlers.

14-2 Girls – Whitney Perret (sponsored by Accelerate Blue)

Lost against Eagles 46-51

Coach comments

  • Eagles were quite a good match for us. They’ve also had issues with illness, and last time we played them we won by just 1 point.
  • They are an undersized but very determined team. We struggled to score at times, and combined with their willingness to get after everything, we were really challenged.
  • We fought back from 16 points down but couldn’t quite hold the lead long enough to get the win.
  • Elly was crucial in bringing intensity and aggression to the team, getting to the line and getting after rebounds.
  • Isabella bought what we’ve grown to expect of her in the paint, being our top scorer again.
  • Lilly’s decision making is really progressing and made some very smart choices throughout the game.

14-3 Girls – Matt Bailey (sponsored by Crothers Pty Ltd)

Lost against Hills 24-51

14-4 Girls – Bryn Arnold (sponsored by Mount Hawthorn Clinical Psychology)

Won against Rockingham 49-35

Coach comments

  • Fantastic all around team performance with all ten players contributing to the win. The team started the first quarter exceptionally well and carried that through the entire game.
  • Shout out to a few of the girls that were hurt or sick but still did a great job helping the team win.
  • Indiana Arnold did a fantastic job rebounding the ball and making better decisions with the ball.
  • Ella Jones did a great job on both ends and finished with 19 points.

14-1 Boys – Dave Ogden (sponsored by Global Cabling)

Lost against Lakeside 77-73

Coach comments

  • It was a tough loss against a well-drilled Lakeside team. The boys fought the game out to the end but just weren’t good enough on the day.
  • Ollie L continues to show his value to the team with a team high 17 points but more pleasingly had a season high 11 boards in an area that our group struggles with. It was the first time we had had a double digit board count for the season.
  • Noah M is settling into the team after missing various blocks of training. He had a game high 3 assists and his kick ahead passes get the team out in transition. His effort to defend over the whole court always brings energy.

14-2 Boys – Craig Dropulich (sponsored by M & T Gomm Pty Ltd ATF Gomm Family Trust T/As Customised Metal Works)

Won against Mandurah 56-55

Coach comments

  • An interesting game this week, with only seven players available and one of them rolling an ankle in the opening quarter. We worked hard throughout, with the game see-sawing back and forth, before finishing strongly in the final quarter to come away with the win.
  • Good to come away from a trip down to Mandurah with a fighting victory.
  • Julian Morris was outstanding in the rebounding, finishing with 18 boards for the game. His positioning is getting better and his strength and size is hard to match on the court. When Julian takes his time with the ball and considers the outcome, he is incredibly hard to stop as he finds himself with easy scores every time.
  • Lance Alfred Dela Vega is starting to let his basketball do the talking, following a new high of 25 points after last week’s 24. Lance is playing his best basketball in close games where it’s needed most. Beyond scoring, his ability to read the play, attack, get to the basket on a rebound, defend any player on the court and help his teammates out at any stage is hard to find at this age.

14-3 Boys – Dom Pitchen (sponsored by Candy Verse)

Won against Senators 54-51

Coach comments

  • It was a very physical game, and the boys did an outstanding job of staying composed and playing through the contact without losing their focus.
  • Their resilience, determination, and willingness to compete in every contest were evident from start to finish. The hustle and effort they displayed throughout the game were exceptional and ultimately became the driving force behind the win.
  • It was a fantastic team performance, with everyone contributing through their intensity and commitment to each other.
  • Elliot played with confidence and aggression, leading the team from the front and setting the tone from the opening tip. His willingness to attack, compete, and play with intensity inspired those around him and was a key factor in the team’s success.
  • Riley did an excellent job of playing through physical contact and attacking the basket with confidence. He also showed great awareness by creating scoring opportunities for his teammates and making the right plays when they were available.

16-1 Girls – Nigel Esau (sponsored by Xceed Real Estate)

Lost against Lakeside 76-66

16-2 Girls – Reid Ballantine (sponsored by Access Hire)

Lost against Slammers 49-74

Coach comments

  • A brave effort to fight the game out after a rough start. Unfortunately, we were very rushed and frantic in Q1 and were unlucky with shots not dropping, which left us a big gap at 2-17 to claw back.
  • A huge improvement in Q2 to win the quarter 20-18, but starting with 8 players, we were down to 7 early in Q2 (ankle injury) and we lost two more players to fouls and played the majority of Q4 with just 5.
  • The girls played with great heart right to the end.
  • Paige Granato pushed a super high pace transition tempo all game and just kept beating them to the basket for 18 points. She played every minute at 110%.
  • Maia Leckey played a huge game and played out of her skin claiming a huge haul of rebounds, despite matching up against some taller opposition. Great positioning, boxing and leaping, time and time again, and also running hard getting out in from in transition for 8 points.
  • Olivia Birsa worked super hard all game and also had some really powerful energetic offensive rebounds generating valuable second chances.

16-3 Girls – Geoff Alger (sponsored by Habitat Finance)

Lost against Senators 54 – 65

Coach comments

  • Disappointing to go down in a top of the table clash but Senators are on top for a reason.
  • Most of the game was a hard fought contest, with each team getting the upper hand for periods of time. Unfortunately, a strong run from our opponents early in the third term gave them a double digit buffer that we weren’t able to chase back.
  • Our team’s super positive attitude persisted throughout, and I was really pleased with how our players handled Senators’ physical defence without looking for the whistle.
  • Iris Mairs had an excellent game and had a positive impact whenever she was on the court. She was consistently strong on the boards, very disruptive defensively and her speed with ball in hand and composed passing made her impactful offensively.
  • Isla Cowman had a strong all round game. Her team high 10 points came at an efficient rate and included 2 of her trademark long bombs and she controlled the ball really well while under a lot of pressure. Her defensive focus was typically excellent, regularly slowing down Senators offense and disrupting with deflections and steals.

16-4 Girls – Ashley Brian (sponsored by Realth Property Group)

Lost against East Perth 64-76

Coach comments

  • Another tough game for our girls. We’ve hit a stretch where we’ve played most of the top teams in the competition in a row, which has been a challenging run. With that being said, we’ve been competitive in every game.
  • For a team that didn’t win a game at grading, we’re now matching it with everyone and have won more games than we’ve lost. So far, it’s been a great season.
  • Allegra has continued to be one of our most reliable players. She brings a sense of calm and stability to the court and was rewarded with a solid all-round game of 13 points, 6 rebounds, 1 deflection and 4 steals.
  • Lily Yin had a great efficient game this week, shooting 66% from the field, including a three-pointer. She also pulled down 12 rebounds while adding 1 deflection and 4 steals.
  • One of our most inexperienced WABL players showed some fantastic improvement this week. In her first season of WABL, Ava Rahimi played with great confidence, taking on the opposition at every opportunity. Ava finished with 4 points, 8 rebounds, 3 deflections and 3 steals.

16-1 Boys – Cameron Redhead (sponsored by Geist Consulting)

Lost against Lakeside 94-73

Coach comments

  • Our group put up a really good battle for 3qtrs. Facing a highly athletic and hot shooting afternoon from Lakeside we knew we were in for a grind of a game.
  • Some nice execution early from both teams saw multiple lead changes throughout the first half, it really was a game of runs.
  • Unfortunately we fell away in the final quarter, with a few too many turnovers and defensive breakdowns, the scoreboard quickly got away from us.
  • Having played every team now we’re really pleased with the progress and excited for how we’ve set ourselves up for the back part of the year.
  • Erik Davies played some extended minutes this week as the only big available. Imposing himself in the keyway with great contests at the rim, along with some excellent positioning and finishing skills to get some reward for his hard work on the offensive end.
  • Harrison Moyle stepped up with some big defensive plays and some excellent buckets at the offensive end. A really good effort this week.

16-2 Boys – Francis Crawshaw (sponsored by F45 Victoria Park)

Won against Lakeside 82-71

16-3 Boys –Vance Karimi (sponsored by School Bus Logistics Pty Ltd)

Lost against Lakeside 71-77

Coach comments

  • We had a close game this week. The first quarter got away from us, but we had a strong second and third, while the fourth was tight all the way.
  • There were plenty of good defensive actions, with the boys doing well to attach to their players, chase through screens, use good footwork to square up, and make offensive players play through them.
  • We found good timing and spacing in transition offence but our half court offensive actions didn’t quite generate any advantages.
  • The boys fought hard right through to the end.
  • Kai had a good defensive game, using his chest to take hits and hustled on loose balls.
  • Eoin was strong with his defence, bumped his cutters, took hits square on and attacked the gaps with ball to get advantages.
  • Jo pushed through a hard knock pre-start, moved the ball at speed in transition and nailed his shots when we needed them.
  • Tom was strong on boards and put-backs and when he chins the ball to swing it, he always sets up clean open 3s for his mates.

16-4 Boys – Oliver March (sponsored by Rangecon)

Lost against Lakeside 76-110

18-1 Girls – Shaun Bennison (sponsored by Strike Drilling)

Lost against Lakeside 60-68

Coach comments

  • Round 9 saw us up against a spirited Lakeside outfit who started the game by setting the tone physically.
  • We struggled to match this same physicality (which is crazy to say for a team of our size and strength) and it took us awhile to find our groove offensively.
  • Trailing for most of the game, down by as much as 12 – we went on a run in the 4th to give ourselves a chance and pull it back to within 3, with a few minutes to go.
  • We managed to execute out of our timeouts and get some good looks – but the shots were unlucky not to drop.
  • Eventually conceding to the better team on the day.
  • Kaia Rukuata broke the game open in the 4th quarter and was a big reason we gave ourselves a chance towards the back end of that game.
  • Gabby Silvester got it done at both ends – contributing 14pts to go along with 9reb, 5stl and 5as.
  • Ella Welsh had an immediate impact when he checked into the game and her confidence in knowing her role in this team continues to grow week to week.

18-2 Girls – Simon Daff (sponsored by West Coast Reinforcing)

Won against Wolves 93-22

Coach comments

  • After a disappointing loss last week I was really looking forward to seeing how the girls responded. The girls came out and made a statement as we won from start to finish.
  • Our defence was the key this week getting back to stopping the ball early. Our great defence generated a lot of fast breaks, which ultimately helped build the score.
  • Very proud of how the girls came together.
  • Cherie Zak continues her impressive and consistent season. Her defensive pressure in the backcourt is a highlight and she was rewarded with 18 points.
  • Salma Rahmadavi had her best game of the year. She stayed aggressive and was constantly getting 2 feet in the paint and making things happen. I was super proud of her effort this week.
  • In what was Cara Hayes 100 game for the club it was a great win to celebrate her. She is the ultimate team player and always takes on any task asked of her on any given day.

18-4 Girls – Mark Wigmore (sponsored by PWS Group and John Hughes Ford)

Lost against Perry Lakes 30-71

Coach comments

  • We let Perry Lakes get out to a fast start and spent the rest of the game trying to get back into the contest.
  • We had good moments but every time we got a run we couldn’t maintain it for long enough.
  • Charlotte Dillon showed intensity and a will to impact the contest from the start.
  • Zoe Viesca continues to attack the gaps in the defense each week.
  • Jamie Thysse ran hard all day and was the most consistent contributor for our team. Her effort to get onto loose balls and rebounds was most impressive.

Lost against Perth Redbacks U20-1, 92-70

Coach comments

  • Team 1 really took advantage of their size in this game, scoring most of their points under the rim.
  • Our boys didn’t give up, and although we had a slow start, we stayed in the contest until halfway through the last quarter, when fatigue led to a few simple turnovers that the opposition converted into scores. Overall, it was a good effort.
  • Noah Baker made his minutes count, coming off the bench and contributing well at both ends of the floor.
  • Ty Demir had a solid game, attacking the rim and providing for his teammates.
  • Jack Ryder gave everything he had being physical on defense and diving on loose balls.
