Game changer Nelson back for Redbacks in NBL1 2021

What’s better than one MVP re-signing? Two MVPs re-signing of course!

We’re delighted to announce 2020 WCC Redbacks Men’s MVP Marshall Nelson will be once again playing in Redbacks colours in 2021.

As NBL1 Director Nathan Barns notes:

“Arguably one of the best players in the league we are rapt to have him back for 2021. He is so dedicated to basketball and training and this is reflected in his performance on game night. The younger players love having him around and learning some of his skills.”

Coach CJ Jackson is excited to see what Marty can produce in 2021 after a stellar showing in the 2020 West Coast Classic:

“He is a dynamic player, he can score and I see bits and pieces of different NBA players in him like a JJ Redick. He became more of a solid defender during the West Coast Classic and I’m really happy he has decided to stay with us and not just that, commit to Redbacks for the next two years.”

Marty says:

“This was the first club to give me an opportunity to play at SBL level. I like the club, I like the direction it’s going in and I want to be part of that moving forward.

I loved that during the West Coast Classic we were able to play at a fast pace and had a lot of freedom to do what we want offensively while still having a good structure to go off as well. It was good to continue to build on the guys I’ve had fun playing with before like Joel as the captain and point guard, and some of the new faces. I thought we gelled really well by the end even though it took us a few games to get into it.

I’m excited to see how it goes and how we gel next season with most of the group returning. I think we are going to be a really tough team next year.”

Marty’s also loving the chance to run coaching programs and work with young West Aussies and young Redbacks in particular. He says:

“It has been awesome and it’s actually helped me out with my game on and off the court. I am seeing a lot of the kids getting better too which is really rewarding. I like the mix that I have going right now. I basically have two jobs with playing basketball and coaching. If I went to play anywhere else I wouldn’t be able to do both. Because there’s so much uncertainty around the world right now it’s good to get back to your home roots. I’m really happy where I am right now.”

Safe to say, when Marty’s happy, we’re happy too. We’re thrilled to have him on board for 2021!
