Perth Redbacks Life Member Ron Romero

Meet the Life Member – Ron Romero

Ron Romero helped found the Carlisle and Kewdale Basketball clubs. These teams competed at the Park Centre during the 1990s. He was a member of the Park Centre Committee of the PBA and helped run the Park Centre Competition during the 1990s. Ron was Chairman of the Tribunal at the Park Centre for the PBA.

Ron coached several junior teams at the Park Centre. He was a member of the Junior Committee of the Perth Basketball Association for over 10 years.

Ron coached the first several U12 boys’ teams to compete in the WABL. One of the players in the first team was Joel Wagner, a Life Member of the Association who has played over 350 senior games for the Men’s SBL team.

Ron has refereed basketball games at the Park Centre for the PBA. He ran, with the help of others, the Junior Redback Classic for 25 years including 16 as the main coordinator.  This tournament was one of the principal in-house fundraisers from 1984-2017, raising over $300,000 for the PBA.

Ron has been the Redbacks SBL statistician for both the men and women’s SBL teams over many years. He represented the PBA and WA at the National Junior Basketball Championships in Tasmania as a statistician and in 2007, was awarded the Department of Sport and Recreation sponsored Statistician of the Year. He was also awarded ‘Male Administrator of the Year, WA’ by Basketball Australia in 2006.

Ron is a PBA Medal of honour recipient and is in our Roll of Honour. Although Ron did not play a single game for the Redbacks he has been a tireless worker for the club – work that would probably take three or more volunteers to do. He was awarded life membership in 2015.
