Weekly WABL Wrap – Round 1 – 26 April 2026

12-1 Girls – Olivia Weddikara (sponsored by Visa4You Migration Agency)

Won against South West Slammers 31-27

Coach comments

  • We started the game down a couple points, but once we got in the groove we were unstoppable!
  • We continued our amazing play style throughout the rest of the half.
  • The girls impressed me by responding to instructions on court and implementing what we’ve learned in training.
  • The second half we started a bit slow and let them catch up a bit, before coming home strong. A good first game this season so proud of the girls!
  • Niyala really pushed her limits on Sunday, using her height and strength to her advantage.
  • Lilah’s defence was incredible, she caused multiple turnovers and made everything hard for the Slammers.
  • Hazel had a strong impact on both ends of the court specifically offence! Her decision making and shot choices showed her high basketball IQ!

12-2 Girls – Dave Power (sponsored by RocketDNA)

Lost against Binar 14-35

Coach comments

  • Both teams went up and down in the first 2 quarters, we had lots of good opportunities in the 2nd QTR.
  • We had a solid 3rd QTR winning the 3rd 5-2 to go into the 4th 11-19.
  • We are really happy with our first hit out, forcing long 2’s and 3’s is a great start defensively protecting our paint.
  • Narayana Daley controlled handling on ball pressure up the floor and was aggressive attacking the basket.
  • Daisy Robertson came off the bench and provided a much needed spark both ends of the floor. Daisy was aggressive defensively getting steals, forcing jump balls and diving on every loose ball.

12-3 Girls – Paul Philpott (sponsored by International Commissioning Solutions Group Pty Ltd)

Lost against Hills Raiders 63-11

Coach comments

  • A tough first game as fledglings to the WABL world. However, despite the score we produced some awesome play throughout all quarters of the game, with the final quarter showing our best energy all day, along with some smart moves, making it that little bit harder for the Hills Raiders.
  • Today we learnt that success is never final and failure is never fatal. It’s courage on court that counts. Today we achieved that!
  • There were some outstanding moments today. Jean Grayson came to life today leading the team in scoring results with her many charges towards the ring.
  • Claire Sunderland was somewhat a bother for the opposition in her court coverage, availability and fighting for every ball.
  • Our normally quiet Matilda Marsland was visibly present today, making her an important player in both defence and offence.

12-4 Girls – Indiana Ballantine (sponsored by Bruining Partners)

Lost against Eastern Suns 21-30

12-1 Boys – Wayne Dropulich (sponsored by SLS Advisory)

Lost against Cockburn Cougars 44-75

Coach comments

  • This was a tough game first up against a very strong Cockburn Cougars side, but one that showed glimpses of what we’re capable of when we play the right way.
  • We started well in the first quarter, moving the ball and finding good looks through Hudson, Baxter, Alex and Cayden to stay right with them early.
  • To the boys’ credit, we didn’t drop our heads. In the third quarter we had patches where we executed well offensively, with Cayden leading the way and others contributing, but we struggled to contain their key players consistently on the defensive end.
  • The fourth quarter was similar – we continued to compete and kept working for scores through Quinn, Alex and Baxter, but the Cougars’ ability to score from the perimeter and capitalise on fouls made it difficult to close the gap.
  • While the scoreboard didn’t go our way, the effort was there, and this game highlighted the importance of defensive discipline and consistency across all four quarters.
  • Alex Litas had a strong all-around impact, finishing with 9 points while consistently putting pressure on the defence with his aggressive drives to the basket and ability to draw fouls. Defensively, he worked tirelessly, recording 6 deflections and 4 steals, and set the tone with his effort and physicality on that end of the floor.
  • Cayden Wedge led the team offensively with 14 points, consistently finding ways to score and competing hard on the glass with 7 rebounds. Despite picking up 4 early fouls in the first quarter, he showed great composure to adjust his game, staying effective on both ends and still contributing defensively with 3 steals.

Lost against Warwick Senators 47-57

12-3 Boys – Mason Wigmore (sponsored by Victory Technologies Pty Ltd and Stanley Ag WA)

Won against Rockingham Flames 88-33

Coach comments

  • We started our season off with a very strong performance in Rockingham.
  • As a team, we defended really well and our offense fed off of that, moving the ball quickly and finding each other for easy baskets.
  • The boys did very well to keep their intensity high throughout the whole contest, playing their hardest from buzzer to buzzer.
  • Lachlan Bright ran hard in transition and finished efficiently, getting himself his first career 20-point game, while playing with an improved defensive awareness.
  • Dougie Butcher and Kedar McCullough were hounds on the glass, pulling down 14 rebounds each and kickstarting our transition game.
  • Also shoutout to Bede Southwell, Lachie Stanley, Bede Whitehouse, Dougie Butcher, and Abimanyu Maciazek for scoring their first of hopefully many Redbacks buckets.

12-4 Boys – Charlize Nicolaou (sponsored by Float Docks)

Won against Hawks 39-57

Coach comments

  • What a fantastic start to the season with a 57–39 win!
  • The boys played brilliantly together, moving in sync and supporting each other every step of the way.
  • Their teamwork, energy, and positive communication really shone through, making it a well-deserved and exciting victory to kick things off.
  • Jackson and I are so proud of everyone for the amount of effort they put in today!
  • Henry, Teo, Harlan, and Riley were outstanding on defence, while Will and Brendon were on fire with all the 3 pointers they got in.
  • Joey, Orson, Ari, and Levi also impressed Jackson and I with their smart, sneaky shooting against the opposition team.

12-5 Boys – Craig Dropulich (sponsored by Ganjing World)

Lost against East Perth Eagles 71-18

Coach comments

  • First game of the season for the team, a lot of nerves and a lot of excitement for the season to come. East Perth came out hard, trapping and putting heavy pressure on our guards as they got up in the first quarter.
  • From the first quarter onwards, the boys showed some of the quickest development in 15 minutes than we had ever seen in a training session so far, adapting to the aggressiveness needed and began winning balls on defense, boxing out and pushing themselves for every loose ball and rebound, and not being afraid to give the ball up to players in better positions. This led to us outplaying and outrunning the opposition in the third quarter 6-10.
  • The boys pushed themselves to their limits to keep fighting through the physical game as the clock wound down and never slowed down despite the deficit.
  • Archibald Pohla was outstanding, he saw the level of physicality that he could play at and went one step further, winning the ball off rebounds, loose balls and stealing it out of players hands the whole game. On offense he was just as great, finding teammates in better positions and hitting the scoreboard when it was his chance.
  • Torben Reiss overcame early nerves to deliver a strong performance, scoring our first 6 points of the game. Torben shot really well, on top of that going on the defensive end and getting a few stops 1 on 1 and winning the rebounding game for us with a strong armed box out. Keep up the great work Torben.

14-1 Girls – Rori Roberts (sponsored by National Geotech)

Won against Cockburn 52-26

Coach comments

  • Great first hit-out for the girls, with the team executing everything that has been put in place so far this season and showing strong ball movement and teamwork.
  • The group handled Cockburn’s momentum well, staying composed after they got within 3 early in the third quarter, and responded with a dominant 21–10 quarter.
  • Darcey Hill had an outstanding first game, she stayed aggressive the whole game and was super annoying on defence. She finished the game with 14 points, 7 deflections and 8 steals.
  • Josie Smith was able to give us multiple second chances on offence by pulling 5 offensive rebounds. She ended the game with a total 12 rebounds plus 9 points.
  •  Massive congratulations to Olive Bird playing her 50th WABL game.

14-2 Girls – Whitney Perret (sponsored by Accelerate Blue)

Lost against Hawks 38-63

Coach comments

  • Strong work rate across the team and excellent execution of a new play drawn up pre-game, helping create better scoring opportunities.
  • Zoe was steady throughout, making good decisions and moving the ball up the floor effectively.
  • Lily brought consistent high effort and energy all game.
  • Eloise finished well at the ring and created multiple one on one opportunities.

14-3 Girls – Matt Bailey (sponsored by Crothers Pty Ltd)

Won against Redbacks Team 4 58-22

14-4 Girls – Bryn Arnold (sponsored by Mount Hawthorn Clinical Psychology)

Lost against Perth Redbacks Team 3 22-58

Coach comments

  • A tough first-up game against the other Redback in our division, but I was really pleased with the way the team continued to work hard across all four quarters.
  • We’ve taken some important lessons from the game and have already been working hard at training this week to improve in a few key areas.
  • I loved the hustle that Peyton Pohla and Millie Kavanagh showed diving on loose balls.
  •  Caitlin Lim showed her ball handling skills under immense pressure all game.
  •  Ella Jones led the team on the offensive end and was our top scorer.

14-1 Boys – Dave Ogden (sponsored by Global Cabling)

Joondalup Wolves – Forfeit (Wolves)

14-2 Boys – Craig Dropulich (sponsored by M & T Gomm Pty Ltd ATF Gomm Family Trust T/As Customised Metal Works)

Won against Cockburn 59-57

Coach comments

  • The game was a hard fought win in overtime with the boys pulling off a comeback to force it to overtime.
  • Credit to them for not dropping their heads, staying focused, and working their way back into the game. Their defensive and offensive efforts improved as the match went on, ultimately helping them close it out with the win.
  • The key highlights from the game were Lance Alfred Dela Vega with 13 points being able to create points from himself and his teammates, rebound effectively to keep us in the game.
  • This win was also due to the defensive duo of Talin McCullough and Matthew Price with their ability to force turnovers steal the ball and make the other team fumble for teammates to steal the ball giving us opportunities to get points to get put us back in the game. Through their incredible defensive effort and pressure on the ball carrier forcing bad passes and lots of turnovers from the Cougars as the inability of Cougars to handle the pressure helped us claw back into the game and get a well-deserved win for the boys.

14-3 Boys – Dom Pitchen (sponsored by Candy Verse)

Won against Hawks 53 – 38

Coach comments

  • The boys started the game strongly, applying consistent pressure and finding open shots early. The second quarter proved to be more challenging, but they worked hard, stayed composed, and held their ground.
  • In the second half, the boys lifted their intensity and began to clean up their play. They made smarter decisions in transition, consistently finding or creating high-quality scoring opportunities, while also tightening up defensively and securing important stops.
  • Overall, it was a determined and resilient performance that showed their ability to adapt and improve as the game progressed.
  • Tyler Carter was a strong leader on the offensive end, consistently creating opportunities for his teammates while also generating scoring chances for himself. His decision-making and composure with the ball helped drive the team’s attack. Well done Ty.
  • Levi Mckibbin applied excellent defensive pressure, which led to several fast-break opportunities. Although his shot wasn’t always falling, he remained persistent, continued to work hard, and contributed positively through his effort and intensity. Great work Levi.
  • Finley Gething was an absolute presence in the paint on both ends of the court. He attacked the boards with determination and drove strongly to the basket, creating space for himself and opening up scoring opportunities for others.

  • Showed glimpses of really good basketball throughout the game.
  • Positive team development as the group continues to learn how to play together and gel.
  • Chelsea settled strongly in the 4th quarter and had an excellent scoring run.
  • Scarlett controlled the tempo well and defended strongly, showing great effort despite being one of the smallest players.
  • Alice had a strong all-round game, contributing consistently on both offensive and defensive rebounds.

16-2 Girls – Reid Ballantine (sponsored by Access Hire)

Won against Wolves 91 – 74

Coach comments

  • 3 – 2 – 1 – Blast Off !! Our girls came out firing with the first three buckets and following through to win Q1 23-14.
  • With just 8 players this week, after hard running in the first half, we definitely slowed down a fair bit in Q3, but some tidy 3pt shooting in Q4 helped us hold the margin to the end and get to 91.
  • I was really pleased with the effort and energy across the game, and the girls did a great job maintaining control right through to the final result.
  • It was fantastic to see 18 assisted baskets, showing great teamwork and unselfish play, with some strong on-court combinations starting to develop.
  • The Saachi-Georgie combo was on fire! with Georgie enjoying some easy access to the basket off a bit of low high give and go with Saachi.
  • Lauren Jones locked in and dropped an efficient 23 points at 55%FG including 2/2 threes neatly swished.
  • Saachi was a stand out playing confident basketball, she really energized the team and was very involved with some nice passing and 8 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists.
  • Georgie Clarke’s 20 / 10 double double was impressive and came from great positioning and trailing through the middle time again.
  • Harper Grace took control of the game, bypassing the defense with swift inbound passing to our breakers, this unlocked the game for us, and Harper worked hard in the keyway on her way to a 10 / 10 double double.
  • Paige Grenato ran so darn fast ! time and time again and got rewarded for effort with 11 points.

16-3 Girls – Geoff Alger (sponsored by Habitat Finance)

Won against Raiders 61 – 51

Coach comments

  • Loved seeing our players share the ball around looking to create great scoring opportunities for the team.
  • Effort on the offensive boards was particularly good generating a lot of extra shots and valuable second chance points.
  • Eloise Clince who played a great all round game consistently put herself in the right places to best help the team on both ends of the floor and then executed skills and decision wise from there. She safely advanced the ball with poise through strong on ball pressure and combined great decisions and skill execution throughout.
  • Eva Blyth’s creativity and composure in offense stood out as she challenged the defense consistently while still making great shot or pass decisions and then executing when the chance to score was there.
  • Nora Ostermeyer played long minutes and maintained consistent effort throughout. Her double-double effort with 14 boards including 8 offensive helping her to 8 of her 12 points was very valuable.
  • Freya Whitehouse was another strong contributor on the boards and consistently demonstrated her ability to break down defense and create great scoring opportunities for the team.

16-4 Girls – Ashley Brian (sponsored by Realth Property Group)

Won against East Perth 85-21

Coach comments

  • After a grueling grading period for our team, it was really nice for our girls to experience a win … and a big one at that!
  • It was the perfect platform for us to apply our pressure defence that we’ve been working on for a few weeks now.
  • Really proud of the group after a game like that. It wasn’t just the win, it was how we played. Everyone was locked in from the start and contributed, everyone scored, and everyone bought into the structure and their role. Within that structure, we saw some big performances …
  • Bianca Bajin was outstanding with 24 points, shooting 47% from the field. She also added a deflection and 7 steals.
  • Sierra Chrislynne Ong played her first ever WABL game, and what a start! She finished with 4 points, 13 rebounds, 1 deflection and 8 steals.
  • And Ava Kemp played the best game of basketball I’ve ever seen her play. She was ruthless and physical on defense and was often the key to why the other team just couldn’t put the ball in the basket. While she contributed a solid 6 points and 8 rebounds, her standout moment was putting the team first and taking charge in the 4th quarter while already on 4 fouls.

16-1 Boys – Cameron Redhead (sponsored by Geist Consulting)

Lost against Flames 91-66

Coach comments

  • After a slow start in the first quarter, the boys rallied in the second to trim the margin back to 8 points. However, we could not keep up with the new gear that Rockingham went to.
  • It was a great learning curve for our group as we now understand what it takes to compete with the top teams in our league.
  • Nate Cass led strongly for the majority of the game, finishing with 22pts, 12 rebounds.
  • Vincent Ryder provided some valuable poise and decision making off the bench, contributing 11pts and two 3-pointers.

  • Tom Smith made some big plays to keep us in striking distance throughout the game.
  • Finally, Ollie Colangelo dealt with backcourt pressure well and remained aggressive throughout the game.

  • First game of the season, with some early nerves. Struggled in the first half to play with confidence but lifted significantly in the 3rd quarter and found our rhythm.
  • Our defence and rebounding were a key which gave us plenty of opportunities to score and I’m excited to see where this group can go.
  • Alessia Wladyka had an outstanding game at point guard, controlling the tempo and playing with intelligence. Strong growth in her offensive aggression, creating her own shot and getting into the paint, finishing with 16 points
  • Cherie Zak provided real impact off the bench with energy that sparked the fast break. Excellent defensive activity from Cherie, creating multiple deflections and turnovers.
  • Sending love to Millie Stancil who rolled her ankle and didn’t return to the game. She provides a lot of experience to this team. Wishing you a speedy recovery Millie!

  • From the tip off, the girls’ teamwork was solid. At times adjustments had to be made – and quickly – and the girls were flexible and successful.
  • Our defence was our best weapon, with some good shot choices missing the mark.
  • The second quarter was remarkable; 20- 5pts in our favour and a testament to improved energy in defence.
  • Paige Wigmore dominated the game at both ends with a score of 20 pts and numerous rebounds and assists.

  • Huge shoutout to the 4 WABL debuts this week!
  • We challenged our players to respond at the break and step up to the required intensity. Pleasingly the response was strong and we split the second quarter 17-17 and remained competitive throughout the second half.
  • Gracie Nash attacked the ring all day and Jamie Thysse showed great leadership in her WABL debut to help settle the team at the offensive end after quarter time.
  • Sienna Care fought hard to give us an option inside and despite picking up two fouls quickly was able to play smart defense for the rest of the game.

18-3 Boys – Helen Pardini (sponsored by OCR Projects)

Won against East Perth 58-59

Coach comments

  • A great way to open the season with a hard fought one point win over East Perth.
  • We came out with strong intent in the first quarter, moving the ball well and scoring efficiently.
  • East Perth adjusted with a zone defence which disrupted our rhythm, but to our credit we maintained composure and held a 6–10 point lead through much of the game.
  • The fourth quarter tested us. Our scoring dried up and East Perth capitalised with a late run to level the game inside the final 40 seconds. In a pressure moment, we stayed composed, executed when it mattered, and were able to finish at the rim to regain the lead and close it out.
  • Really proud of the boys’ effort and competitiveness. Our defensive intent and willingness to work and hustle were key factors in the result.
  • Mark Sunkar made an immediate impact when he entered the game. His defensive energy, rebounding, and ability to create second effort plays gave us important stops and extra possessions.
  • Jackson Newsome, in his first WABL game, showed great composure. He made strong decisions in the paint and finished with 15 points in a very solid debut.
  • Arman Demir competed hard all game. His defensive effort and willingness to put his body on the line were outstanding. His ability to stay locked in under pressure and respond when things weren’t going his way was crucial in closing out the game, including a key late basket that proved to be the difference.

  • The girls showed that strong offensive execution and the ability to play through breakdowns are key at this level, displaying resilience and poise to build a 15-point lead.
  • Was a great all-round game from multiple players, Jenna was a standout with 19 controlling the tempo and getting some handy steals.

Lost against Wolves 95-84

Coach comments

  • The boys played a very strong game on both ends against one of the clear favourites in Joondalup, and by halftime there was very little to separate the two sides.
  • Despite the result, the boys made a strong statement to open the season.
  • Cuba Brian was our best player on the day with positive leadership on the court and a healthy scoring conversion.
  • Ethan Wood-Hill was very aggressive in defence and kept the opposition away from the basket. He also crushed the boards a lot and contributed well on the offensive side with strong drives to the basket.
